Specialized Tube Bending Capabilities

When you are building a specialized application, it requires precision tube bending to ensure a leak-proof installation. Threaded ends and brackets must be located accurately if the mating part is to be successfully coupled to the tube. The ends of the tube must be free of distortion from bending and be accurately sized to fit-up and seal correctly.

Precision Bending Technology has the in-house precision tube bending capability to create fixtures, tools and gauges that produce and check the critical attributes of your part. This ensures that the tubular part will fit and perform as designed.

Ensuring Quality with Photogrammetric Technology

In addition to “hard” tools, PBT employs Photogrammetric Technology to collect data from samples and production runs to develop predictive models which can yield insights into reasonable tolerances for any given size and type of material. Data AICON can also be transmitted to the CNC tube bending equipment to reverse engineer a sample part or fine-tune the bending program.

Types of Tube Bending

Precision Tube Bending

Precision tube bending is designed for applications that demand exact dimensional accuracy, properly threaded brackets, and distortion-free tube ends. When tubes must mate together with zero tolerance for error, this process delivers.

Using specialized tooling and gauges, precision tube bending achieves tight-fit outcomes in both form and function — ensuring every bend meets the required specifications for fit and performance.

Roll Bending

Roll bending uses a three-roller machine called a jig to shape metal tubes, pipes, sheet metal, and metal bars into curved forms. The tube is placed into the jig, and the middle roller is manually lowered and pressed against the tube to form the desired curve.

Roll bending is particularly suited to producing large-radius, circular, or arc-shaped bends and is a versatile option for custom bending applications.

Press Bending

Press bending is the most widely used and straightforward form of tube bending. The process uses a bend die pressed directly against the tube or pipe to produce the desired angle or shape.

While it is the most accessible method, press bending offers less dimensional precision than other techniques and is best suited for applications where tight tolerances are not required.

CNC Tube Bending

CNC tube bending enhances rotary draw bending with computer-controlled automation, delivering superior speed and repeatability — especially for complex multi-bend parts. CNC equipment automatically positions and manipulates the tube to precisely align each bend relative to the others, eliminating human error in multi-plane geometries.

CNC tube bending is recommended for parts with two or more bends. While single-radius designs are ideal, our CNC equipment also supports mixed bend radii within a single part, expanding design flexibility for complex tubular components.

ROTARY DRAW BENDING

Rotary draw bending is a precision bending method that uses a mandrel placed inside the tube, combined with a bend die, clamp die, pressure die, and wiper die on the outside. This multi-die setup controls metal flow throughout the bend, preserving the tube's full outside diameter and producing a smooth, clean exterior finish with no wrinkling or collapse.

This method is the preferred choice for fluid handling lines, structural components, and any application where bend cosmetics, tight bend radii, or strict dimensional tolerances are critical. These characteristics are unique to rotary draw bending and cannot be replicated by less controlled methods.

Rotary draw bending is not limited to round tube and pipe — it is also used to bend extruded shapes, square and rectangular tubing, and channel profiles.

SELECTING THE RIGHT METAL MATERIALS FOR CUSTOM BENDING PROJECTS

One of the most important parts of the process of custom metal bending is the selection of the right material. It is as crucial as the bending process itself.

Precision Bending, a leader in the field, emphasizes the importance of material selection for the success of any custom bending project. We take a look at why material choice is vital and how it impacts the outcome of a bending project.
